Hai Phong Viet Nam

Haiphong was one of Vietnam’s principal ports and trading centers.

Hai Phong was originally founded by Lê Chân, the female general of a Vietnamese revolution against the Chinese led by the Trưng Sisters (Hai Bà Trưng) in the year 43 C.E. The area which is now known as Duong Kinh District was once known as Hai tan Phong thu (“defensive coastal area”), and served as the second capital of the Mac dynasty (1527–1592). At the end of Nguyen Emperor Tu Duc’s reign, the headquarters of An Duong District was also moved to Hang Kenh Communal House, which now belongs to Le Chan district.

Haiphong was one of Vietnam’s principal ports and trading centers. When the country was invaded by the French, the city became France’s main naval base in Indochina. After World War II, when Vietnam attempted to regain its independence, Hai Phong was the site of the first military action undertaken by the French. While it was claimed that the French heavy cruiser Suffren bombarded the city, only 3 avisos participated in the operation that contributed to the start of the First Indochina War

Buffalo Fighting Festival 2012 opens

698543.jpeg

(Cinet)- The Buffalo Fighting Festival is annually held with an attraction of huge crowds, eager to see a display of violence in the northern coast of Vietnam .

Buffalo Fighting Festival is a traditional festival of Vietnam attached to a Water God worshipping ceremony and the “Hien Sinh” custom to show marital spirit of the local people in Do Son, Hai Phong.

There are so many festivals in Vietnam including a folk festival, special art performances, the inauguration, ecological tour,, a traditional rowing contest on the Son River, and buffalo fighting festival…

This year’s festival saw competitions among 16 buffaloes selected from qualifying rounds at ward and district levels. Buffalo fighting festival attracts over 30,000 visitors.

A good fighting buffalo must not be castrated and must have one or all of the following: big horns, a large neck, short legs, red eyes, thick cilia, strong and good-looking teeth, and a strong and red scrotum (affectionately dubbed the “gear box”).

In one of the fights, a buffalo is killed by a ho lao strike, prompting festival organisers to remove the carcass in a truck. Some of the fights get out of control. Each buffalo has a distinct method of attack: charging headlong into an opponent; lifting an adversary onto its hind legs, exposing the vulnerable underbelly; or jabbing the eyes, ears or neck with its horns. Determining the loser its simple – it’s the buffalo that dies or runs away first.

Unfortunately for the buffalo, this good treatment is short-lived. At the end of the festival, all of the contenders – regardless of whether they win or lose – are slaughtered and fed to the crowd. Although it may seem strange to eat the entertainment, village residents say the meat is some of the best they’ve ever tasted.

After 15 matches with impressive performances, buffalo No. 25 from Van Son ward became the champion. Buffalo No. 01 from Minh Duc ward came in second and buffalo No. 11 from Van Huong ward, third.

Both the winners and losers are then killed to worship the God and their meat is equally divided to everybody.

The traditional festival, which is held annually on the ninth day of the eighth lunar month, demonstrates the martial spirit of people. It helps promote the locality’s images and tourism potential.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has ranked Cat Ba archipelago in the north to national heritage status.

The elevation comes as nearby Hai Phong City prepares for next year’s National Tourism Year of Song Hong (Red River) Delta.

The archipelago has more than 300 islands, of which Cat Ba is the largest. Limestone mountains surge out of the water in many parts of the area. The archipelago joins the World Heritage protected Ha Long Bay.

The park is home to more than 700 species of flaura and fauna, including rare trees and endangered animals. Its forests remain largely untouched.
